August 2022: Chemical, Water Quality and Macroinvertebrate analysis

Attached are the results of Water Quality Monitoring and Chemical sampling across the Pimpama, Coomera and Nerang River catchments for the month of August, 2022.

A couple of comments regarding the results:

  1. The saltwater sampling produced the highest levels of salinity sampling so far: from almost 40 parts per thousand at Paradise Point to 27 parts per thousand at Upper Coomera. By way of contrast the open sea generally samples at 55 + parts per thousand. Given that mud crabs have a preference for salinity at 20 – 25 parts per thousand you can take a good guess at where they will be in the Coomera River system

  2. Dissolved Oxygen levels in the rivers and streams are still high which is great news for animals that live in those systems including platypus and macroinvertebrates

  3. Results are generally pretty good, bearing in mind that Waterhen Lake will never be pristine; yet Waterhen Lake is experiencing significant reductions in Ammonia Nitrogen readings which are now only 10 – 20% of what they were 5 years ago – great news for the animals which call the lake home, and also showing up in the wetlands at Regatta Waters Park as the large Eucalyptus Tereticornis have rapidly gained in health due to water quality, and our plantings in the wetlands which have reduced salinity levels.
