August 2023: Water Quality and Macroinvertebrate analysis

Hi everyone Just wanting to share with you the results of WQM and Chemical Analyses for last month. An explanation for the results follows:

  1. The results showed that the effects of a lack of rain were evident in the Coomera River where the salinity did indeed vary from upstream to downstream. The saltwater at the weir is as saline as we have seen it largely due to the lack of freshwater.

  2. There was a distinct lack of pollution evident as Phosphates were generally in the normal range and Ammonia Nitrate concentrations showed that septic systems and sewage reticulation were working quite well; this is great to see.

  3. On the fishing front there were a few mangrove jack caught at the weir which was a lot of fun for those involved.

A big thankyou to young Andy who assists in the collection of fishing tackle from the Tackle bins at the weir. This alone saves many birds from damage, and sometimes death, due to entanglement in fishing line, hooks and lures. The species of bird affected includes the raptors (White Bellied Sea Eagles, Ospreys, Brahminy Kites, and other Kites), Pelicans, several species of Cormorant, Herons and Egrets, Pied Mudlarks, Magpies and native Ducks) where fishing line, in particular attached to a sinker and hook, wrap around a foot or wing, or become embedded in the chest muscles. This cause amputation of a leg, and sometimes causes the bird to be unable to fly and feed, resulting in death by starvation. So, great work, Andy and family. Kindest regards to you all Steven Gill
