June 2023: Water Quality and Macroinvertebrate analysis

Hi everyone

I trust you are enjoying the Spring-like weather.

Attached are the results for our monitoring for June, 2023.

In respect of those results the following comments are offered for your consideration, and many thanks to Helen and Ross, Kim and Brian for their tremendous assistance – well done.

  1. The water temperatures in freshwater this year are above what would be expected; this points to an early Spring season

  2. For most locations the chemical analyses are within expectations; the variant is Killarney Court which spiked at a massive 0.42 mg/L for Ammonia Nitrogen, which is a measure of waste products of animals. Based on experience the cause would most probably be either animal waste being dumped into the Coomera River (as happened downstream from Birds Road Crossing a couple of years ago) or a malfunctioning of sewerage.

The result is not duplicated at the Coomera River Weir so is localized.

  1. Here have been a lot of mudcrabs caught below the Coomera River Weir and they do look quite delicious

  2. The high salinity readings continue in the Coomera River due to a lack of rainfall; there are quite few mullet heading upstream with what I have been told are scars from escaping netting

  3. As I also clear the Tacklebins at the Weir (along with young Andy and family) and under the Coomera River bridge, it is gratifying to see that many people are cleaning up after themselves; this isn’t always the case.

Enjoy life.

Kind regards

Steven Gill
