September 2024: Chemical, Water Quality and Macroinvertebrate Analysis

Hi to our valued volunteers

Please find attached the results of Water quality monitoring along the freshwater reaches of our catchment for the month of September, 2024.

There is some interesting data, highlighted as follows:

  1. There is a high phosphate reading at all except two sampling location ( Heritage Drive and Birds Road) along the Coomera River right down to the weir. This is most likely the results of mass fertilizing somewhere upstream from the FG Walker bridge, and also fertilising from Riverstone Crossing down to the weir. At the same time, Ammonia Nitrogen readings are about average which indicates septic tanks are being maintained and pollution from animal waste is being contained.

  2. Waterhen Lake is showing high levels of phosphate pollution due to lower water levels concentrating the nutrient. Lower water levels have also concentrated the levels of Ammonia Nitrogen. Turbidity levels also reflect the lack of flow to flush sediment from the lake.

  3. Yaun Creek at Jessica Drive had evaporated and I was unable to sample again prior to the end of the month.

  4. Water temperature and the other readings from the Horiba were generally within normal limits.

Last month we were unable to undertake our final planting for the year at Regatta Waters Park due to flooding of the site. I was there yesterday and the ground has dried out nicely so we expect to be able to carry out the final planting for 2024 in November.

An invitation is extended to everyone to attend that planting which will be conducted on Saturday 9th November, 2024 commencing at 8am.

Morning tea will be provided and I look forward to seeing your smiling faces.

Kindest regards

Steven Gill
